Director of Engineering

Hirestarter's client is looking for an experienced Director of Engineering to lead a team of world-class builders, including Software Engineers, Front-End Developers, Site Reliability Engineers, and more. 

As the Director of Engineering, you will play a crucial part in continuing to build on our inclusive behaviors and practice a thoughtful, high-performing approach to Engineering. You’ll also support internal stakeholders throughout the business and work closely with cross-functional teams, like User Experience, Product Management, and Analytics. 

Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, you’ll regularly interact with executives and department heads across the company to discuss ideas in real-time (e.g., roadmaps, risks, and work dependencies). 

Responsibilities 

  • Lead a team of about 40 Engineers with a range of responsibilities: hiring diverse, talent; providing technical leadership for product teams; managing Engineers from junior to principal; partnering with executives across the business; delivering on business strategy

  • Support four Engineering Managers (each specializing in a product area) as your direct reports

  • Ensure that our Engineering Managers and their direct reports are highly engaged

  • Make sure that product partners are highly satisfied with the work our Engineers are producing

  • Set up your team with capabilities to execute complex projects across a slew of product areas in an Agile, iterative manner, without compromising architectural excellence or our long-term product roadmap

  • Manage the annual operating and capital expenditure budget for Engineering staffing, ensuring that the budget is consistent and compliant with the company overall strategic objectives

  • Establish, monitor, and maintain fantastic communication between the Engineering department and others

  • Enforce high standards in software production as established by our Architecture Council

  • Mentor and coach your team members, enabling them to make bold decisions that can transform the company

Requirements 

  • 12+ years of relevant professional experience, some of which involves working with Internet-based products

  • 4+ years in Engineering management at an agile organization

  • A strong manager who has mentored direct reports at an organization of at least 20 people

  • Stellar interpersonal and communication skills for working with groups small and large

  • Charismatic, with an earnest desire to help others

  • A team player with excellent servant leadership and negotiation skills—you’re an impactful influencer who can make tough decisions when needed

  • Able to support multiple teams and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical teammates

Plus:

  • Experience working for a company with a strong consumer-facing component, such as retail or e-commerce

  • Formal knowledge of process improvement methodologies

  • Experience with cross-functional teams or matrix organizations
